The buried, unconscious elements of the human psyche; everything except the Ego and the Persona.
A Jungian archetype, embodying the hidden "dark" side of the Self, i.e., the unconscious. Its opposite is the Persona, the image of the public self that one presents to the world, or one's conscious sense of the self (the ego). Part of the hero's challenge involves reconciling this opposition and coming to terms with the repressed unconscious side of the Self. Campbell uses the example of Luke Skywalker's ultimate atonement with Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.

Shadow is that which Amber creates, which seems real, which comes in infinite profusion, but which is not real. Everywhere between Amber and the Courts of Chaos is Shadow. Worlds of fantasy, dotted with faerie forests and orcish castles. Worlds of science fiction, bristling with technology, spacecraft and maybe even Bio-Implants. Worlds like Earth, but variants based on different histories; or like Earth, but inhabited by different creatures; or like Earth, but of a different age. Amberites can walk to any Shadow that they can imagine, and have it be exactly the world of their dreams.

In my column, The Low-Down on the Far-Out, I occasionally refer to something called the Shadow, especially when talking about Mercury Retrograde. The Shadow refers to the area of the zodiac where a planet goes retrograde (appears to go backward). The planet "retraces its steps," so to speak, and appears to travel through that area 3 times: first direct, then retrograde (backwards), then direct again. (See diagram below.) This usually refers to the transit ing planets (in real time), not to your natal planets (in your natal chart). If a planet in the Shadow makes an aspect to your natal chart during this time, you will have three passes of that transit. This means there is more to the situations happening during that time than what you may see on the surface. Those situations will evolve during the time that planet is in the Shadow. See also: Direct, Retrograde, Stationary, Transit. See also the article series on Retrograde Planets, including one article specifically on the Shadow and Stations.
