Spessartite is a variety of garnet. The color ranges from a yellowish-orange to an intense aurora red to a deep-orangey color. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, spessartite is 7-7.5. It has a vitreous luster and primary sources include Burma (Myanmar), China, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania, and the United States. (See Spessartite Facts.)
