Spessartite is a variety of garnet. The color ranges from a yellowish-orange to an intense aurora red to a deep-orangey color. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, spessartite is 7-7.5. It has a vitreous luster and primary sources include Burma (Myanmar), China, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania, and the United States. (See Spessartite Facts.) Spessartite or Spessartine Garnet is the red orange to yellow orange to brown orange variety of Garnet.
