In a square-rigged vessel, the sail next above the lowermost sail on a mast. This sail is the one most frequently reefed or furled in working the ship. In a fore-and-aft rigged vessel, the sail set upon and above the gaff. See Cutter, Schooner, Sail, and Ship.
A sail or pair of sails set immediately above the lowermost sail of a mast.

a sail set above another larger sail
The sail above the lowermost sail on a square-rigged ship; also, the sail set above and sometimes on the gaff in a fore-and-aft rigged ship.
The second sail (counting from the bottom) up a mast. These may be either square sails or fore-and-aft ones, in which case they often "fill in" between the mast and the gaff of the sail below.
A sail set on a topmast. In square-rig, it is the sail[s] next above the course. In fore-and-aft rig, it is the sail set above a gaff sail. LISSA has both types: square upper and lower topsails on the foremast and mainmast, as well as a gaff topsail on the mizzenmast.
The second sail up from the deck on the mast, between the mainsail and the top gallant. (See rigging illustration.)
1) On a square-rigged vessel, a sail directly above the lowest sail on a mast. 2) On a fore-and-aft- rigged vessel, the next sail above the gaff of a fore-and-aft sail.
A topsail is a sail set above another sail; on square-rigged vessels further sails may be set above topsails.
