After many delays caused by D'Angelo's record label folding and legal trouble with his management, Voodoo was finally released in January 2000. Though not as uninanimously lauded as Brown Sugar, it initially sold better than its predecessor, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200, and going platinum two months later.
