Since the Renaissance, fine art has distinguished itself from craft in the conventional sense of "mere" manual dexterity or technical skill. In the era of mechanical reproduction this notion of craft has generally suffered a loss of respect.

It is usually a manual occupation that requires extensive training and a high degree of skill, such as Journeyman Lineperson or Maintenance person. However, with the enhancements in technology, it can also include classifications that use computers to help assist in their daily functions.

The term craft defines the making of a work of art rather than its aesthetic qualities. Works that can be defined as crafts usually have a more practical function than those we think of purely as works of art.
