Definitions for "Brinell Hardness"
hardness testing standard, which uses the measurement of an indentation of a known substance made under a controlled pressure. Used primarily for soft materials like aluminum. See also BHN, Rockwell C-scale
A rating of hardness for a metal part. The Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) is determined using a standard table. Critical information includes the diameter of the impression left by a metal ball that is pushed into the surface metal and the load applied on the ball during the impression.
A measurement of a metal hardness (or ability to resist penetration). A steel ball is forced into the surface of the material tested under a specific load. The diameter of the depression is measured, and the hardness is the ratio of load to spherical area of the impression.
