A trench in the bottom of a dry ditch which functions to drain water and obstruct the enemy.

(Fr.) - a narrow drainage ditch running along the bottom of a trench.  Drainage was a continual concern whenever an earthwork was occupied for any length of time.  Drainage ditches have been observed to survive, typically within semi-permanent forts, siegeworks, and larger batteries.
