Is a ball in the possession of a player from each team at the same time. In the High school and College games, one team gains possession of the ball after a held ball is called. In the NBA, possession is determined by a jump ball between two players.

Formerly called a "jump ball."  When two players on opposite teams are in joint control of the ball.

When two opposing players both possess the basketball but neither one can gain sole possession. In the NBA, the ball is blown dead and a jump ball restarts play. College teams use the alternate-possession rule.
