Before deciding which insecticide would be best for your particular pest, take another look at how much damage is really being done and how large the pest population is. Many pests can be manually removed (as caterpillars can) from infected plants and some, if found only in small numbers, may cause only minor damage and could as easily be ignored. Some of the best pest control mechanisms are cultural and physical; these should always be applied before resorting to insecticides. Once, however, the pests do become a real problem, be sure to consider organic insecticides; those derived synthetically are often toxic to beneficials and animals, and they may also contribute to the decline of your local environment. Though some organic insecticides can also be toxic when used in quantity (like sulfur, neem, and pyrethrins), they will break down more quickly than their synthetic counterparts. Many organic options have very low toxicity or none at all; these include diatomaceous earth, horticultural oil (used discriminately), and insectidal soap.

a substance that kills insects. Insecticides are often used to kill insects that are considered to be pests. What constitutes a pest is all relative, though. Some gardeners consider anything that eats their plant leaves to be a pest...this would include butterfly caterpillars, though! Some insecticides only work while they remain on the plant surface. Others are considered to be systemic, meaning they enter the system of the plant and remain there for a long period of time, killing anything that eats the plant.
