The "girdle of strength" in the center of your body, just below your navel. Engaging your Powerhouse involves the lower abs, lower back, pelvic floor, and smile muscles. Jillian's award-winning exercise DVD, Pilates Powerhouse Workout, focuses on developing this vital center in students.
Joseph Pilates' term for the core region of the torso, including the abdominal muscles, pelvic girdle, buttocks and lower back.
Also called "the girdle of strength." The area between the bottom of your rib cage and the line across your hips – for many the most neglected area of the body. Working the Powerhouse, as virtually all Pilates exercises do, flattens the stomach, and firms the buttocks. The Pilates Method focuses on specific muscle groups in this center of the body, namely: the rectus abdominis, the internal obliques, lower back muscles, the transversus abdominis, and the gluteus maximus – all of which form the support structure for the spine and pelvis areas.
