with regular, saw-like, teeth
a. (L. serrare, to saw) notched on edge like a saw; having sharp notches along the edge pointing toward the apex; as, a serrate leaf. When a serrate leaf has small serratures upon the large ones, it is said to be double serrate, as in the elm. A serrate-ciliate leaf is one having fine hairs, like eyelashes, on the serratures. A serrate-dentate leaf has the serratures toothed.

Having a row of short tooth-like denticles.

notched like a saw with teeth pointing toward the apex
Saw-edged, with sharp teeth.
Edged with toothlike projections, as in a saw.
Having margins with sharp teeth.
A sharply toothed leaf margin. Serrations are conspicuous on some species; on other species they may only be visible with magnification.* Go Back
With edges like a saw blade.
with teeth like saw (cutting edge of bill)

Leaves with toothed, saw-like margins.
The condition where the margins of a leaf (or leaflet) have small jagged projections; examples include the leaves of Hackberry. A doubly serrated leaf has fine serrations that occur on the edges of larger serrations; an example is the leaf of American Elm. A leaf (or leaflet) that has smooth margins is called "entire", such as in Pawpaw.
Sawtooth margin of a leaf with the teeth pointed forward.
having small, pointy teeth that point toward the tip of the leaf.
