Visual SourceSafe (Microsoft) provides versioning and 'configuration management' (Also see Configuration Management) functionality in addition to security and audit trail capabilities. Visual SourceSafe is also a source control system. Source control capability is beneficial and advisable when developing software, web sites, when comparing two or more versions of a file, or when retrieving previous version.
