The sample is poured into the top of a column packed with an adsorbing material and washed through with a solvent. Different components adsorb to different extents and so move through the column at different rates. They are eluted in the liquid from the bottom of the column at different times as fractions. If the column material is more polar than the solvent, the components are separated by their differences in polarity, with the less polar components passing through the column faster than more polar ones.
