A way to classify land area. A habitat type can support certain climax vegetation, both tree and undergrowth species. Habitat typing can indicate the biological potential of a site. ( FS People's Glossary of Eco Mgmt Terms)

Collective term for those physical areas (environments) that support or can support the same plant association, or did support it prior to its destruction or modification by fire, flood, grazing, logging, or epidemics, etc. (3.) A taxonomic unit and a mapping unit.
