Set up on 1 April 2004, the Healthcare Commission exists to promote improvements in the quality of healthcare and public health through independent, authoritative, patient-centred assessments of the performance of those who provide services – including both private and public agencies.

the Healthcare Commission is a new organisation launched on 1 April 2004. It has been set up to improve the quality of healthcare. It will do this by providing an independent assessment of standards of services, whether provided by the NHS, the private sector or voluntary organisations.
