Indentation on the edge of the paper outside the border from the pressure of the paper on the engraved plate during printing.
In intaglio printing, outside edge of plate is an embossed imprint.
the mark by the edges of an Intaglio Print
A rectangular impression made on the paper by the embossing action of the etching press along the beveled edges of the plate.
Impressions made from metal plates often show an indentation of the paper extending to just outside the printed area, made when the paper was crushed by the plate during printing.
Also called intaglio impression, it is produced from pressure of the external edge of an engraved plate on the printing surface.
The rectangular indentation made by the pressure of the plate in Intaglio Printing
The indentation made by a printing plate in the paper. One of the distinguishing characteristics of all gravure and intaglio work, the plate mark is also a beautiful way of setting off the printed area from the rest of the paper. The greater the pressure used in the press, the smoother and more compact the plate mark. The plate can be cut off directly from the edge of the image area, or a white margin can be left. (Cf. masking.)
In intaglio prints, the impression of the plate itself forced upon the paper by pressure of the etching press.
