Keywords:  plunger, brew, coffee, steep, mesh
Also known as a “coffee press,” the French press is a cylindrical glass with a circular screen insert, usually large enough to make only one or two drinks. Large grains of coffee (or tea leaves) are combined with hot water and left to brew inside the covered press. When brewing is complete (usually 4 minutes), the screen is pressed down to isolate the coffee grains at the bottom of the glass. The coffee is then poured into a mug for a freshly-brewed drink.
A French Press is a pot with a narrow glass cylinder into which coffee and near-boiling water are placed. Then a meshed screen plunger is inserted. The coffee grounds are allowed to steep for about 3 minutes and then pressed out. Coffee is served from the cylinder.
Coffee grounds and water are steeped together. After the grounds sink to the bottom of the coffeemaker a strainer plate is pushed down to separate the beverage from the spent grounds. This brew is thicker bodied than drip coffee since the coffees oils and extreme fine sediment have not been filtered out.
