A receipt signed by the mate to say the cargo has been received on board in good order and condition.
An archaic practice. An acknowledgement of cargo receipt signed by a mate of the vessel. The possessor of the mate's receipt is entitled to the bill of lading, in exchange for that receipt.
A document signed by the chief officer of a vessel acknowledging the receipt of a certain consignment on board of that vessel. On this document, remarks can be made as to the order and condition of the consignment.
A declaration issued by an officer of a vessel in the name of the shipping company stating that certain goods have been received on board his vessel.

A receipt signed by a mate of the vessel, acknowledging receipt of cargo by the vessel. The individual in possession of the mate's receipt is entitled to the bill of lading, which in due course is issued in exchange for that receipt.
A Mate's Receipt provides evidence of delivery of goods to a ship. It has no legal value but it serves a useful purpose and is usually surrendered against Bills of Lading.
