"Moira" is a Greek mythological reference in keeping with the Athena theme - the Moirae were the three Fates. Moira is the central database that manages most aspects of the Athena environment. It uses an RDBMS (currently Oracle) as a backend, and contains tables of users, hosts, filesystems, quotas, lists/groups, printers, and other minor bits of grot used to manage the environment. Moira has access to change other Athena servers, such that a change made to moira will be automatically reflected on the relevant servers. Thus, to add a new printer, rather than making changes on the print and boot servers, we simply create it in moira and let moira handle the details of configuring the servers. This means that recreating a damaged server is simply a matter of installing a basic machine and telling moira to reconfigure it.
