A manufactured fibre in which the fibre-forming substance is a long-chain aromatic polymer having reoccuring imidazole groups as an integral part of the polymer chain. PBI is an abbreviation for polybenzimidazole. (See also Classification Table p.401.)
Polybenzimidazole, a synthetic polymer designed for high temperature applications. Used as an adhesive, composite, and a coating with metals and as a fabric for structural fire fighting gear.
