Whereas CDs use a process calls Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), which is reputed to sacrifice subtleties of music, SACDs use Direct Stream Digital(TM) process, which records a 1-bit signal at 2,822,400 samples per second. At the optical level, SACDs are essentially DVD format.
Developed by Sony and Philips, SACD uses 1-bit Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording technology. Most discs are dual layer, with a standard CD layer which will play on a conventional CD player and a second SACD layer for improved performance when replayed on a dedicated SACD machine.

SACD audio discs will require new players, but most, if not all, new SACD players will also play consumers' existing CD collections.
A new aural scheme from Sony and Philips, the original inventors of the compact disc that adds a much more robust musical format than that of the standard CD. An SACD has a sampling rate of 2 882 400Hz, 64 time higher than that of a standard PCM CD at 44 100Hz. Additionally, the frequency response has been broadened to 100Hz, allowing you to hear a much broader detail of the music.
Super Audio CD (SACD) is a read-only optical audio disc aimed at providing much higher fidelity digital audio reproduction than the compact disc. Introduced in 2000, it was developed by Sony and Philips Electronics, the same companies that created the CD. SACD is currently in a format war with DVD-Audio.
