Often used synonymously with LAN fax, this device has two meanings, 1) an overall LAN or host network fax system; or 2) the central LAN node or device which attached to phone lines on one side and to the LAN on the other.
a computer within a network that provides a bank of fax/modems to fax out and receive faxes
an ideal solution for organizations looking to reduce incoming and outgoing telephone resources but that need to fax actual documents
a server dedicated to sending and receiving faxes only
a server that handles all incoming and outgoing faxes
a system installed within a local area network (LAN) server allowing users to send and receive fax messages directly from their desktop PC
A computer based fax machine. Fax servers are “shared use devices,†typically installed on a Local Area Network. Clients on the LAN can use the fax server from their PCs in much the same way they share the use of a printer connected to the network.
An external device that accepts client messages from a telemessaging platform, converts them into the format used by fax machines, and delivers them to the client's fax machine. Many fax delivery units have been expanded to send alphanumeric pages and e-mail messages as well.
A specialized IVR system which sends facsimile messages to a fax machine designated by DTMF tones. What amounts to a database of fax text resides in the server that is accessed via a user's DTMF phonepad. Requests result in the fax pages being delivered to the chosen fax and the subscriber charged a fee.
A specialized network server that can send and receive faxes on behalf of the user community that it supports; receive incoming faxes from phone lines and direct them to users across the network as well as accept outgoing faxes across the network and redirect them over a telephone line.
A fax server is a set of software running on a server computer which is equipped with one or more fax-capable modems attached to telephone lines (or, more recently, software modem emulators which use T.38 ("Fax over IP") technology to transmit the signal over an IP network). Its function is to accept documents from users, convert them into faxes, and transmit them, as well as to receive fax calls and either store the incoming documents or pass them on to users. Users may communicate with the server in several ways, through either a local network or the Internet.
