A one-time British colony that borders China's Guangdong Province. Britain initially gained control of parts of Hong Kong in the mid-19th century through treaties forced upon the Chinese in the aftermath of the Opium Wars (1839-1842 and 1858-1860). Part of Hong Kong (the New Territories) was leased by China to Britain in 1898 for 99 years. The anticipated expiration of that lease set in motion Sino-British negotiations that culminated in the agreement to return all of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997. At that time, Hong Kong became a Special Admin-istrative Region of the PRC.
