The term may be applied to individuals who use more than two languages in their lives (it is normal and customary in many places in the world—parts of Europe, Africa, and South America, for example—for the majority of the population to be multilingual). The term may also be applied to communities where more than two languages are commonly used; U.S. cities with large and diverse immigrant populations, such as New York, Chicago, or San Francisco, may be considered multilingual cities.
