Sign languages are highly-developed visual-gestural-spatial communication methods. Examples include American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed English.
The American Sign Language (ASL or Amesian) is one form of manual communication used by Americans who are deaf. Sign language is not universal. Persons who are deaf from different countries speak different sign languages. The gestures or symbols in sign language are organized in a linguistic way. Each individual gesture is called a sign. Each sign has three distinct parts: the handshape, the position of the hand, and the movement of the hands. The ways on which the signs of ASL are combined are unique to it. They are not based on English or any other spoken language. An alternative sign system known as Manually Coded English(MCE) includes Signing Exact English (SEE). Another system known as Pidgin Sign English (PSE) includes ASL signs but uses English word order.
A system of hand movements and positioning which is used to represent words and thought concepts by deaf and partially deaf people when trained in its use. Many others who have no hearing problems of their own also learn sign language to help those who are hard of hearing.
Any system of communication by manual signs or gestures, such as those used by the deaf (ASL, BSL).
A sign language differs from other human languages only in using a gesture system rather than a sound system.
language expressed by visible hand gestures
a language which uses gestures instead of sound to convey meaning - combining handshapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, facial expressions and lip-patterns
A visual, gestural language used by Deaf people, which uses the hands, arms, upper body, head and face to convey meaning. It differs from spoken and written languages in that it uses three dimensions to express relationships, and so it has a completely different grammatical structure to a spoken language. Simultenaity in the language allows a signer to use two signs at the same time, which would be impossible in a written or spoken language.
A formal system of hand shapes and positions that comprise a method of communication.
language of hand shapes, facial expressions, and movements used as a form of communication.
American Sign Language, Signing Exact English, and other non-verbal forms of communication.
A language made up from hand gestures. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may learn to speak British Sign Language or American Sign Language as a first language and will read English as a second language.

A visual-motor communication system commonly used among Deaf people in which gestures are used instead of speech. Sign languages have grammars and vocabularies different to one another and to the spoken language used in which they are used.
Manual communication commonly used by people who are deaf. The gestures or symbols in sign language are organized in a linguistic way. Each individual gesture is called a sign. Each sign has three distinct parts: the handshape, the position of the hands, and the movement of the hands. American Sign Language (ASL) is the most commonly used sign language in the United States. Deaf people from different countries speak different sign languages.

American Sign Language (ASL or Amelsan) is one form of manual communication commonly used by deaf Americans. Sign language is not universal; deaf persons from different countries speak different sign languages. The gestures or symbols in sign language are organized in a linguistic way. Each individual gesture is called a sign. Each sign has three distinct parts: The handshape, the position of the hands, and the movement of the hands. Like any other language, ASL has a distinct grammatical structure. ASL is not based on English or any other spoken language. Two sign systems which are based on English are Signed Exact English (SEE Sign) and Signed English or Siglish. The three systems have elements in common, but American Sign Language is the language used by the majority of deaf persons throughout the United States.
A sign language (also signed language) is a language which uses manual communication instead of sound to convey meaning - simultaneously combining handshapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, and facial expressions to express fluidly a speaker's thoughts. Sign languages commonly develop in deaf communities, which can include interpreters and friends and families of deaf people as well as people who are deaf or hard of hearing themselves. They are also used by people with speech impairments such as Aphasia.
