The term Third Sector is a modern substitute for 'voluntary sector'. It is usually used to refer to all organisations not part of the business or government sectors. It could include unions, churches, clubs, associations, fundraising charities, self-help groups, grant-making trusts and foundations, community organsiations, pressure groups, etc.
This is made up of organisations that are not fully in the private or public sector, for example, voluntary organisations and community groups.
See Voluntary Sector, although sometimes used specifically in relation to Co-operatives or Social Enterprises. With the establishment of the government's Office of the Third Sector, May 06, we learn that they use the term to describe 'non-governmental organisations which are value-driven and which principally reinvest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives. It includes voluntary and community organisations, charities, faith groups, social enterprises, cooperatives and mutuals.'
