Definitions for "Air Test"
A test performed to give an indication of a detectors depth capabilities when a target is passed over the search head.
The process of sampling a target with the search coil elevated in the air and away from any other interfering metal target, except the one being sampled. Air testing is a valid and useful method to determine maximum potential detector depth capability, discrimination-points of various targets and their audio characteristics. It is to be used for 'guideline' results only, as air-test results can vary for targets buried in the actual soil matrix.
A test of a trains air brakes at the start of a run to ensure they are functioning properly. Air tests are generally performed at a train's initial terminal, when adding or removing cars or locomotives en-route. On longer runs they are also performed at specific intervals.
