Form of packet multiplexing characterized by the identification of individual channels based on global addressing. Hence, there are no predefined virtual circuits. As such, connectionless services use addressing that is of global significance.
network A network over which an application or process can directly send and receive data one packet at a time without having to first set up a session or connection. A connectionless network is also referred to as a packet-oriented network or datagram network. A protocol can also be connectionless.
Mode of communication in which a connection (circuit or logical channel) does not need to be set up for data transmission between the transmitter and receiver. It is the underlying protocol for packet-switched transmission. The individual data packets can go from the transmitter to the receiver via different paths. A well-known connectionless protocol is UDP.
The data communication method in which communication occurs between hosts with no previous setup. Packets between two hosts may take different routes, as each is independent of the other. The model of interconnection in which communication takes place without first establishing a connection. Sometimes (imprecisely) called datagram. Examples: Internet IP and OSI CLNP, UDP, ordinary postcards.
