A discrete message in an appropriate format to be transported by a switching and/or multiplexing method. Cells and frames are examples of PDUs used in frame relay and ATM respectively. SMDS uses two types of PDUs - " SIP Level 3 PDUs" and " SIP Level 2 PDUs." Click here to view a diagram
A unit of data specified in an protocol and consisting of protocol control information and possibly user data. source: ITU-T X.290 domain: TMN acronyms: PDU usage
A packet of data passed across an IP network.
A segment of data generated by a specific layer in a protocol stack; usually consists of a block of data from a higher layer (the Service Data Unit or SDU) encapsulated by the next lower layer with a header and trailer.
Type of data unit used by a particular protocol. Often preceded by letter to indicate protocol layer--for example, NPDU and TPDU for network and transport layers. A PDU is the information that is delivered as a unit between peer entities of a network and may contain control information, address information, or data.
The unit of information that is exchanged by peer Layer Service Providers to implement the protocol that offers the service. The PDU consists of a Protocol Control Information and Service Data Unit.
A discrete piece of information (such as a packet or frame) in the appropriate format to be segmented and encapsulated in the payload of an ATM cell.
A unit of data in a network. For SDLC protocols, a PDU is a path information unit. For token-ring protocols, a PDU is an I-frame.
Refers to a network communications packet.
"PDU" is internationalstandardscomitteespeak for packet. Seealso: packet. protocol stack
A unit of data equivalent to the frame which is passed between protocol layers.
