High-grown Dominican coffee is a fairly rich, acidy coffee with classic Caribbean characteristics. Lower grown Dominican coffees tend to be softer and less acidy.
The quality and variety of cigar tobacco from the Dominican Republic has improved enormously in the past 20 years. The primary growing region is near the city of Santiago in the northern half of the country. Located in an agricultural region, this small city is also home to the majority of Dominican cigar makers. Most Dominican tobacco is derived from Cuban seed varieties. Although not as strong, it is quite full flavored and lends itself to the creation of unusually complex blends.
Telecommunications in the Dominican Republic is one of the fastest growing and most competitive industry sectors. Fixed-line teledensity (around 10%) is, however, well below the Latin American average, the country’s fixed line network having been repeatedly destroyed by violent hurricanes. Mobile penetration, on the other hand, is more than three times higher than fixed-line teledensity, and is about average for Latin America. Verizon Dominicana is the dominant provider of fixed-line and mobile telephony, as well as Internet services. The market for high-speed Internet is still young and there is enormous potential for growth. The location of the Dominican Republic ensures fairly high Internet speeds. The telephone cable that connects Europe to the USA runs close by and allows for excellent connectivity. However, Internet uptake is relatively low, and user penetration, at around 9%, is below average for Latin America.
The Dominican Republic, (Spanish: República Dominicana, IPA ) is a country located on the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering Haiti. Hispaniola is the second-largest of the Greater Antilles islands, and lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative rule lasted for much of the 20th century; the move towards representative democracy has improved vastly since the death of military dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in 1961.
