How we as individuals understand the world in which we live. This understanding involves an interaction between our individual psychologies and the social structures that surround us. It provides a basis for explaining situations, guiding behaviour, imparting meaning to life, instilling a common bond among group members, and making sense of the world.
At the most general level, ideology refers to process by which the set of values and beliefs that bind individuals together in a society become “naturalized.” The belief and value systems of any given society are the outcome of history , that is, of collective human activity that gives shape (in large and small ways) to the characteristic features of a society. Ideology names those social and political processes that directly and indirectly mask or hide this historical process by making everyday life seem natural, inevitable and unchangeable. The claim that capitalism is the only rational form of economic organization is often ideological in this way, especially when what this claim suggests is that history was inevitably moving towards a world-wide capitalist system anyway: people did nothing to bring it about and can do nothing to stop it. This is false, and ideology is often at work in attempts to make false statements sound not only like the truth, but like common sense. See also Close-Up box 2.1 in textbook.

The complex of ideas based on principles and axioms, which in as such are not questionable nor submitted to criticism or revision. It can be of religious, political or sociological character, and implies a whole of beliefs, attitudes and behaviours for which the individuality loses in part the exercise of the eleutheria, adhering to what which does not come from itself but from the outside. It is characteristic of every ideology the lack of critical sense and the clear conviction of what which "good" is and what which "evil" is. Every doubt is dispensed on the theoretical plan and it concerns only the act and proceed ways for the triumph of it. The single men, as "ideology-depending" and "homologated" can (in the set) become that human totality to which is often given the "mass" denomination.
