Latin = a hollow or space which may contain air, venous or arterial blood, lymph or serous fluid; adjective, sinusoid.
Abnormal opening. Elongated tract leading from pus-filled region of the body to the exterior or to the cavity of a hallow organ.
hollow in a bone (paranasal sinus) or other tissue; a channel for blood (vascular sinus); any cavity having a narrow opening
An opening or space in a tissue. Infectious processes often produce a nonhealing sinus which may connect between tissues or even to the outside.
(sigh´ nus) [L. sinus: a bend, hollow] • A cavity in a bone, a tissue space, or an enlargement in a blood vessel.
Cavity of the anterior margin, usually produced by an anteriorly directed ramus.
A cavity in a bone or other tissue. Commonly used to describe the cavities in the skull that open into the nasal cavity.
A cavity found within the bones of the skull. The cavities are interconnected to the nasal passages and are lined with a mucus membrane and are subjected to blockage resulting in a squeeze when a diver descends. Spotter: For safety reasons, free-divers never train alone. Their buddy is referred to as a spotter and will step in to assist if there is any sign of a problem. The spotter is trained in the necessary first-aid techniques.

an air-filled space in the diploe of a skull bone
a small cavity in the bones of the face with a hole that drains away fluid into the nose and down the throat
(L. sinus, cavity, channel, hollow) A cavity in a bone, e.g., frontal sinus.
air spaces above the upper teeth
(SI-nuhs) A space within a bone lined with mucous membrane, such as the frontal and maxillary sinuses in the head. Also, a modified vein with an enlarged lumen for blood storage.

a recess, a cavity or hollow space, a dilated channel for venous blood or a small tunnel
An air-filled cavity in a dense portion of a skull bone. The sinuses decrease the weight of the skull. The sinuses are formed in four right-left pairs. The frontal sinuses are positioned behind the forehead, while the maxillary sinuses are behind the cheeks. The sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses are deeper in the skull behind the eyes and maxillary sinuses. The sinuses are lined by mucous-secreting cells. Air enters the sinuses through small opening in bone called ostia. If an ostium is blocked, air cannot pass into the sinus and likewise mucous cannot drain out. See also: Sinusitis .
