A logical key whose action can be changed during the course of the application, depending on the context in which it is called. JAM uses a keyset to determine the action that a particular soft key will take. The keyset also contains labels that can be used to inform the user of the action of the soft key. Soft keys can be simulated on terminals that do not provide hardware support for them.

A soft key is a button, located along a display device, which performs whatever function is shown near it on that display. Soft keys are generally found on cellular phones, Automated Teller Machines, and Primary Flight and Multi-Function Displays, although they are also found elsewhere. Hard key is the contrary term which means a hard coded key such as number key pad or Send/End key of mobile phone.
