Definitions for "Standard error of the mean"
A term used in statistical analysis. A computed value based on the size of the sample and the standard deviation of the distribution, indicating the range within which the mean of the population is likely to be from the mean of the sample at a given level of probability (Alreck, 456).
The standard deviation of the hypothetical normal distribution of sample means (from the Central Limit Theorem). Can also be calculated by dividing a sample's standard deviation by the square root of the number in the sample
The standard error of the mean is the standard deviation of the entire distribution of random sample means successively sampled from a single population. An estimate of the standard error of the mean can be made on the basis of the information contained in a single random sample, that is, the variability within the sample and the size of the sample.
