A secondary or additional product; something produced, as in the course of a manufacture, in addition to the principal product.
A product of considerably less value than the major product. For example, in U.S. meat animals, the hides, pelts, and offal are by-products, whereas meat is the major product.
Material of some economic value produced in a process which is focused on extracting another material. For example palladium is produced as a by-product of platinum mining in South Africa.
