refers to the number of offences in a category recorded in a fixed ratio such as per 1000, per 10 000, or per 100 000 population. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) provides crime rates for most crimes. It is thought to be a more reliable indicator of crime trends as it standardizes the actual occurrence.

Relates the incidence of crime to population, so that it can be compared uniformly without regard to population size. In this release the rate is calculated by multiplying the number of offenses by 100,000. That number is then divided by the population of the service jurisdiction based on 1990 census figures.
Crime rate is a measure of the rate of occurrence of crimes committed in a given area and time. Most commonly, crime rate is given as the number of crimes committed among a given number of persons. Often, the type of crime is exactly specified.
