(abbreviated NPC) literally a character not played by a player, that is, a character played by the GM. The GM does not usually identify with the character, and plays the character in order to further the action between the characters who the players identify with. by extension, a character a player plays for similar reasons. contrasts with player character.

(NPC) In Tabletop Role Playing the Game Master portrays all the Non-Player Characters (NPCs). In Live Action Role Playing each Non-Player Character must be portrayed by a different person (however the Monster Co-Ordinator will decide what NPCs are supposed to be doing). A person involved in the team of Non-Player Characters (as opposed to a person with the Players).
