Non-Player Character. Any character in a game that is not controlled by a player. An NPC (left) engages the player in BloodRayne 2.
A player playing a character who's actions have been instructed by Plot. They tend to have a bit more information and personality then the monster's you'll meet on the trails.

Basically, an NPC is any creature not under direct player control, such as an average citizen walking down the street, a shopkeeper, or the other patrons in the bar youâ€(tm)re in. Many of these characters arenâ€(tm)t of any significance, unless they are specifically interwoven into a plot—but they are equally important and protected under Allerian law. NPCs can only be controlled by whoever is modding a particular thread.

This is usually a minor character that has no player, but is controlled by either another player, a site wizard, or an automated script. It can sometimes refer to playing a second character interacting with your own and others.

NPC areas are areas that are not played ICly but /are/ there. Numbweed Numbweed is a substance used for healing, it numbs the area applyed. It is the most common remedy on pern. OOC Out Of Character is something said by the player and not the character.
