A group of animals of the same species living together and dependant on one another. Some colonies are physically connected and function as a single unit.
A colony of birds is a group of individuals of the same species which stick closely together. Colonies are typically formed for nesting or roosting purposes and are especially prevalent among shorebird and gull species.
a group of individuals of one species living together.
A group of organisms living in close proximity. An invertebrate colony is a close association of individuals of a species which are often mutually dependent and in physical contact with each other. A vertebrate colony is usually a group of individuals brought together for breeding and rearing young.
a stand or group of one species of plant, from seed origin or those connected by underground structures such as rhizomes.
a group of same-kind animals that live together.
A group of cats living wild outside, as in feral cats.
a group of related bees that live together in a hive or another dwelling as a unit
n., a stand, group, or population of neighboring plants of one species, the origin having been colonial, from seeds, or both.
a group of cells that function on one, organized unit such as Hydrodictyon
Usually refers to the way algal cells cluster together. A colony is an irregular cluster of algal cells.
A community of tens of thousands of worker bees, usually containing one queen, with or without drones.
a community of bee having a single queen, thousands of worker bees, and for many parts of the year, drones.
a group of animals of the same type living together
(microbiology) a group of organisms grown from a single parent cell
a continuous group of coral polyps forming a single unit
a group of bees with comb and brood
a group of the same kind, living together in close association
a group of two or more Aristasian households that are near to each other
a hive and its equipment and appurtenances, including one queen, bees, comb, honey, pollen and brood
a place to live, work, play, raise a family, argue with the neighbors, and grow old in low-g comfort
a super organism, an assembly of workers so tightly knit around a mother queen as to act like a single, well-coordinated entity
group of wild or feral cats living outside
all the worker bees, drones, queen, and developing brood living together in one hive or other dwelling.
A large group of a single species of organism, living close together. Some animals that live in colonies include ants and termites. Some plants that live in colonies include Yellow Pond Lily, cattails, and crabgrass.
a group of organisms of the same species living in close association with each other
A community of several thousands worker bees, drones and one queen.
A breeding aggregation of birds. A martin colony is just a random aggregation of unrelated birds attracted to a common breeding site. It is not an assemblage of birds that travels or functions as a group. Individual martins arrive in spring, and depart in late summer, independently of each other. At the colony site, individual martins aggressively compete with each other for nest cavities and mates. They in no way help or cooperate with each other. A person has a colony of Purple Martins (and is officially a "martin landlord") when they have two or more pairs breeding in the nesting compartments they offer.
A group of the same kind of animals, plants, or one-celled organisms living or growing together.
group of people or animals
a group of individuals of the same species produced vegetatively or by seed, that may or may not be genetically identical.
large group of penguins living together
A community of almost fifty to sixty thousand worker bees, usually containing one queen, with or without drones. (based on Latin 'colonia')
group of cells all derived from one recent mother cell and held together by an extracellular matrix, but not closely adhering to each other and not integrated as a single individual.
Colonial: many organisms living closely together for mutual benefit, for example sharing nutrients. Graptolites and corals can be colonial.
A group of living things of the same species found within a defined area.
A group of hamsters that lives together. Colonies consist of one male and several females or several of the same sex. (Not recommended living conditions for hamsters in captivity.)
a group of social insects having a queen and workers
An animal population maintained under some degree of control for the purpose of reproduction. A group of animals representing a single genetic pool produced at a single site under identical conditions of management.
the aggregate of worker bees, drones, queen, and developing brood living together as a family unit in a hive or other dwelling.
An aggregation of individuals with some degree of organization in a community, normally of one species.
In biology, a colony (from Latin colonia) refers to several individual organisms of the same species living closely together, usually for mutual benefit, such as stronger defences, the ability to attack bigger prey, etc. Some insects (ants and honey bees, for example) live only in colonies. The Portuguese Man o' War, is an example of a colony of four different polyps.
