Medieval dessert pies often contained wine, herbs, almonds, dried fruits, and even minced or thickly sliced meats. They were somewhat smaller and chewier than today's pies, spiced, highly sweetened with sugar or honey, and sometimes thickened with almond milk while baking. Their crusts were often crimped around the edges and for festive occasions, their top crusts were decorated with comfits and had flavored sugars strewn over them. Violet and rose sugars were the favorites and were colored, accordingly. Sometimes their top crusts were glazed with sugar and white of egg and, occasionally, they were gilded with a thin, edible gold leaf when served at royal banquets.
To dream of eating pies, you will do well to watch your enemies, as they are planning to injure you. For a young woman to dream of making pies, denotes that she will flirt with men for pastime. She should accept this warning. See Pastry.
