An interval of time on the processing unit allocated for use in performing a task. After the interval has expired, processing unit time is allocated to another task, so a task cannot monopolize processing unit time beyond a fixed limit.
A quick period of time in which a program is given to access the processor.
The maximum amount of time for which a process can run without being preempted.
A brief period of time during which a particular task is given control of the microprocessor in a time-sharing multitasking environment. A computer's processor is allocated to an application, usually measured in milliseconds. Time slice is also called quantum.
Time Slice is the period of time for which a process is allowed to run uninterrupted. The scheduler is run once every time slice to choose the next process to run. If the time slice is too short then the scheduler will consume too much processing time but if it is too long then processes may not be able to respond to external events quickly enough.
