The microphone can hear best from the front. (A shotgun mic is a good example)
Audio: microphone which is designed for an improved signal to noise ratio over omnidirectional microphones. Unidirectional, or directional, microphones have a either a cardioid, hyper-cardioid or ultra-cardioid polar pattern.
A type of microphone which will only pick up sounds from one direction, usually directly in front. Loosely used as a synonym for cardioid (qv).
