Duty is a levy charged by the Government, usually when things are bought, such as shares or buildings.

You may be required to pay import duty if you are bringing goods into the UK. There is no duty on goods that are in free circulation (see Free circulation) within the EU. For goods that are imported from outside the EU, the rate of duty depends on the product and the country of origin. Duty is based on the cost, insurance and freight value (ad valorem duties) of the goods. Rates of duty can vary suddenly and without warning and can have a significant effect on the value of the goods.
