It is not known for certain where north came from, but it has been suggested that its origin is nertro, which means 'left' in an extinct language of Italy known as Oscan-Umbrian. The underlying meaning is that north is 'to the left as one faces the rising sun'. Nord in German, Swedish and Danish is 'north' and the Irish 'north' was based on tuaisceart a word meaning left.
