An artificial firework consisting of a cylindrical case of paper or metal filled with a composition of combustible ingredients, as niter, charcoal, and sulphur, and fastened to a guiding stick. The rocket is projected through the air by the force arising from the expansion of the gases liberated by combustion of the composition. Rockets are used as projectiles for various purposes, for signals, and also for pyrotechnic display.
any flying device propelled by the reactive force of hot gases expelled in the direction opposite its motion. The fuel used to generate the expelled gases in rockets may be solid or liquid; rockets propelled by liquid fuels typically have a combustible fuel (such as hydrogen or kerosene) which is combined inside the rocket engine with an oxidizer, such as liquid oxygen. Single liquid fuels (called monopropellants) are also known. Since rocket engines do not depend on a surrounding fluid medium to generate their thrust, as do airplanes with propellers or jet engines, they may be used for propulsion in the vacuum of space.
A projectile that contains its own propellant and that depends for its flight upon the reaction resulting from the release of a continuous jet of rapidly expanding gases. Fr: fusée
A vehicle designed or adapted for high-altitude research. The ideal meteorological research rocket has a low thrust and long burning time to avoid high acceleration while attaining high altitude, has a large and recoverable payload, and is a stable platform for experimental equipment.
A tube or cylinder, with a cone-shaped front, containing a propelling pyrotechnic charge attached to a rigid, guiding stick. When ignited, the expelling combustion from the tube propels the tube and attached stick into the air. Some rockets are designed to produce some color, whistle, report or other minor effect at the highest point of the flight path.
Device which provides propulsion through the expulsion of some mediumat high velocity.
any vehicle propelled by a rocket engine
a jet engine containing its own propellant and driven by reaction propulsion
propels bright light high in the sky, or used to propel a lifesaving line or harpoon
a cylindrical case which can be projected as a result of the reaction of gases discharged from its rear when its combustible contents are ignited
a device that burns fuel for propulsion
a device used to deliver a payload to a specific destination
a device with more thrust than weight
a jet engine that propels something in the air
a machine that develops thrust by the rapid expulsion of matter
an engine that is used to propel a vehicle at an extremely fast speed
a special case because it contains all the elements it needs to operate, including both fuel and oxygen
a tube-like device filled with combustible solids and/or liquids
a tube-like object, some shaped like a paper towel roll, that is sent flying into the air when its fuel is lit on fire
a tube-like pyrotechnic device made out of a paper tube that propels itself into the air in order to fly
a type of engine that pushes itself forward or upward by producing thrust
a vehicle, missile, or aircraft that creates thrust by expelling burned fuel (as exhaust) at a high rate
a vehicle, missile or aircraft which obtains thrust by Almost always characterised as light weight/low cost construction
a vehicle, missile or aircraft which obtains thrust by expelling burned fuel as exhaust at a high rate
A device propelled by ejection of matter, especially by the high velocity ejection of the gaseous combustion products produced by internal ignition of solid or liquid fuels.
A missile or vehicle propelled by the combustion of a fuel and a contained oxygen supply. The forward thrust of a rocket results when exhaust products are ejected from the tail.
A device shaped like a cylinder that moves at high speed, powered by gases that are forced out of one end. Considered the oldest form of self-contained propulsion. They carry their own oxygen and can go where ther is no air into space. They can burn liquid or solid fuel.
an unguided self-propelled projectile carrying a warhead.
Self-propelled firework which rises into the sky and may burst into many stars like a shell.
A rocket is a machine that propels itself and a payload into space.
A rocket is a vehicle, missile or aircraft which obtains thrust by the reaction to the ejection of fast moving fluid from within a rocket engine.
